Rules For A Knight
By: Ethan Hawke
It’s Time for another edition of “What Is Amy Reading?”
Ok, so you last were reading “David and Goliath”, specifically for the chapter on “You Wouldn’t Want Your Child to have Dyslexia…Or Would You?” Such a good book. He’s come out with a new one: “Revenge of the Tipping Point”. I had an opportunity to listen to him here in Dallas as he did a Q and A from the book.
But that’s not what Amy’s reading. Amy picked up a gem in a cute bookstore in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Of course I picked it up because it said ‘Ethan Hawke’. Right!? But, as I got into it, I discovered truly what a treasure this is!
15th century, Sir Thomas Hawke, (real person), going into battle, realizing he’s going to die. So he writes a letter to his children about things that he wished they would know. Ethan Hawke- yes a very distant relative, but a relative, nonetheless- hears of this letter and this story and he writes what he thinks would’ve been in the letter. And it wound up being a story for his children of some of the thinks he wishes to pass on.
And so it’s all based on rules for a knight. And it includes things like: solitude, humility, gratitude, discipline, cooperation, courage. Oh, but so many more- each little section is like two to three pages. Very digestible. So tiny for this very busy season.
But, let me read to you what really I found to be the treasure. As I was looking into the book, trying to see ‘When was it first written?’, on the dedication page it says:
“Ryan and Ethan Hawke are donating 100% of the royalties from this book to organizations to help young children or people overcoming learning disabilities.”
It was meant to be.
One of the sections that was written in this is about friendship. And as a Rule for a Knight, it’s very important to learn about friendship.
So I leave this with you:
“The quality of your life will, to a large extent, be decided by whom you elect to spend your time with.”
I elect to spend my time with you and I hope, in return, you spend your time reading this book. It’s great! Put it on your wish list!
